What is an Oil Seal?

  • A specific type of seal that is an important part of any rotating or moving part assembly. 
  • Typically, the Oil Seal is installed adjacent to a bearing
    • This seals in or seals out, as necessary, the various liquids, gases or solids encountered by the mechanism.

 What is the purpose of an Oil Seal?

  • An Oil Seal is designed to perform three major functions. 
    • Prevention of lubricants from leaking outside the seal
    • To act as a barrier to retain the lubricating oil
    • To prevent dirt and other contaminants from entering the machinery.

 How is an Oil Seal constructed?

  • Oil seals normally consist of three basic components:
    • the sealing element
    • the metal case
    • the garter spring.
  • The sealing element makes up the interior of the Oil Seal and provides structural stability to the Oil Seal. 
  • The materials commonly used are: 
    • Nitrile Rubber (NBR)
    • Polyacrylate Rubber (PA)
    • Silicone Rubber (SI)
    • Fluorocarbon Rubber (FKM).
  • The metal case is the exterior of the Oil Seal. 
    • The main function of the metal case is to give rigidity and strength to the seal.
    • Often the case is covered by the same rubber material used in the sealing element, which also helps seal the exterior of the Oil Seal in the housing bore.
    • Common case material types are:
      •  Carbon Steel
      • Stainless Steel.
  • The garter spring is located at the end of the primary sealing lip
  • Is used to apply pressure to the sealing lip against the shaft as well as prevent the entry of contaminants from the outside. 
    • Common garter spring material types are:
      • Carbon Steel
      • Stainless Steel. 

NBR Oil Seals

Nitrile - (NBR/BUNA)

  • NBR is a synthetic rubber produced from a copolymer of acrylonitrile and butadiene. 
  • NBR is the recommended seal material for most common applications.  
  • NBR seals are compatible with water and most common mineral oils and greases. 
  • They have good abrasion resistance, resistance to compression set, and a high tensile strength.
